Senior Construction Accountant

This key position will oversee residential construction and development projects and work closely with all team members. Reporting directly to the Principal, this role is a combination of hands-on construction accounting, draw preparation, accounts payable, payment application verifications, financial reporting, and third-party tax preparation oversight. This newly created position prepares monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting packages for different joint venture entities and manages the annual budget process while driving systems and process improvements.

The Job Essentials:

General

  • Primary responsibility for all accounting over construction and development projects
  • Provide construction expenditure forecasts for the duration of the project, updated monthly
  • Prepare monthly draw packages for submission to construction lender
  • Provide analysis as needed for financial decisions and contract negotiations
  • Maintain Job Cost sub-ledger system for all company construction projects
  • Ensure applicable vendors/subcontractors lien releases are included in construction packages
  • Assist with year-end tax compliance, successfully partnering with an outside CPA firm to prepare all federal income tax returns and all legal and corporate filings

Leadership, Support and Communication

  • Evaluate, design, implement, and monitor internal financial controls, accounting processes and policies for efficiency, cost effectiveness, and accuracy
  • Supervise one bookkeeper and provide training and leadership in accomplishment of goals and objectives
  • Manage payroll, corporate benefits, business expenses, and employee expense reimbursements

Working Relationships

  • High emotional intelligence a must – positive, innovative, self-aware, confident but collaborative
  • Independent, but unafraid to seek advice/assistance as necessary

The Qualifiers:

  • Prior construction, development and/or real estate accounting experience a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA is a plus
  • 4 years of experience in an accounting role
  • Knowledge of GAAP, accrual basis accounting and financial reporting
  • Excel software proficiency
  • Strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail
  • Motivated and results-driven with strong work ethic
  • Ability to lead a team and be a partner to management team
  • History of community participation and/or volunteerism is a plus
